#18 Boss Hoss

Just got back from a trip to Michigan and I know this may sound strange, but I enjoyed the quiet dreariness of the place. It’s the peaceful grey of it all that I enjoyed as compared to the never ending hustle of SF life. It was nice to be able hear my own thoughts and not have all the sensory overload of California life for a few days.

Enjoy the stillness

I was out in Michigan pow wowing with my team and taking care of business. The night before our meeting, my business partner, Pete, introduced me to his best friend Ryan aka Hoss. Before I get to Hoss, let’s take a moment for this commercial break. The Wren Project is brought to you by Lube-N-Ade. There’s nothing like washing down those tasty chicken wing nuggets with a nice cold glass of goopy lemon corn starch. Lube-N-Ade…a drink fit for kings…who enjoy disruptive bowel movements all…night…long.

Is there no goodness in the world?

Now back to our scheduled blog. Friends, countrymen, lend me your ear.

I met Hoss at an interesting restaurant establishment. He’s a big fella which probably has to do with the fact that he was in the military. The military police to be exact.

Don’t let this picture of him relaxing fool you. This is how he unwinds after kicking ass and taking out fools with only his left pinky. You don’t want him to pull out his right one. This guy is one tough mutha and don’t you dare make fun of his glasses. He told me of a time he bought these real expensive glasses with ballistic lenses. He got all sorts of flak from the guys in his unit, but it was one of the wisest things he’s ever done. One day he was manning a .50 caliber on the back of a humvee while patrolling. They were riding along when all of a sudden a roadside bomb went off. Shit was spraying all over the place and hit him directly in the face. The only reason he survived was because the detonator had gone off early and if it hadn’t been for those glasses he probably would have lost his sight. If the bomb had gone off one or two seconds later, game over for Hoss. That’s one lucky break. He had to leave the armed forces early due to back issues developed from carrying around 100lb ammo and having to jump on and off of trucks constantly. So what does he do now?

That’s right, he goes fishing with his right pinky. I pity the fish that encounters Hoss. From the limited time that I spent with him, I could sense a really good-natured vibe. I hear he’s a fantastic husband and dad. I hope to get to hang out with him more when I travel back to Michigan again. I salute you my new found friend.

Nice glasses. :)
